Digital asset management: traceability of returnable load carriers

Smart software for seamless returnable load carrier management
Goal of the project
Returnable load carriers are essential for safely transporting various products. Maintaining high stock levels prevents system downtime and ensures seamless loading at all times. However, the costs for special racks, crates, liquid tanks (IBCs) and other containers can be substantial due to high circulation volumes or custom designs. Additionally, strict quality and safety standards must be met to prevent premature defects, such as valve failures or coating wear. Regular maintenance cycles, especially for liquid tanks, are crucial to maintaining product quality, particularly in the food industry.
ifm offers an innovative solution to solve these challenges: moneo Track & Trace. By equipping each returnable load carrier with an RFID tag, its exact location can be determined, ensuring precise monitoring and traceability. The intelligent analytics of moneo Track & Trace provide maximum transparency, allowing you to optimise your process planning with efficiency.

Enhanced transparency for superior process quality and lean management
By effectively monitoring your returnable load carriers, moneo Track & Trace provides numerous benefits to enhance your processes:
- Overview and efficiency: Maintain full visibility of your transport containers at all times and optimise their usage. This streamlines your processes.
- Minimised search times: Improved inventory transparency reduces search times, simplifies maintenance planning, and reduces the risk of downtime.
- Lean management: With enhanced transparency, minimum stock levels can be optimised, and dynamic redistribution of returnable load carriers can be performed based on their locations.
- Automated documentation: Benefit from efficient and automated documentation through logbook entries of important process steps such as cleaning procedures.
- Easy integration: moneo Track & Trace can be quickly and easily integrated into existing processes and operated as an on-premises or cloud-based solution.

Efficient localisation and traceability with moneo Track & Trace
Each load carrier is fitted with an RFID UHF tag, allowing continuous localisation and traceability of your returnable load carriers. These tags enable precise identification and efficient management of objects. UHF technology allows the tags to be read from several metres away and in high volumes. Bulk reading processes are highly efficient, as they eliminate the need to separate load carriers before tag scanning. Automated detection minimises errors and saves time that can be invested in value-adding processes.
The station-based localisation of load carriers in moneo Track & Trace enables automated inventory management, making it easier to locate and compare stock levels. The historical documentation fulfils the traceability requirements and secures claims against the manufacturer in the event of a defect. Choose from affordable compact devices to advanced intelligent gate solutions. moneo Track & Trace can also be used with other identification technologies such as multicode readers for reading 1D and 2D codes (e.g. data matrix codes).
The 10 most important functions of moneo Track & Trace at a glance
- Clear identification of each individual container
- Localisation within a graphic layout
- Search by ID, type and other attributes
- Alarm messages for under/over supply
- Key performance indicators such as dwell time and throughput
- Traceability of process data (e.g. humidity and temperature)
- Maintenance support through cycles and inspection dates
- Events for integration into ERP processes (e.g. transfer posting)
- Preparation for eKanban processes
- Flexible system integration through REST API and webhooks
Interfaces and integration of moneo Track & Trace
First, each returnable load carrier is permanently fitted with a UHF tag. UHF compact devices or the ifm gate solution (ZZ0814) are installed at each detection point, such as hall entrances, plants or buffer zones. The data from the RFID tag is detected by sensors such as code readers (1D and 2D codes such as data matrix codes or barcodes). The IO-Link devices are connected to moneo using an IO-Link master. The IO-Link master plays a central role in data transmission. It connects the sensors to the system and ensures seamless communication. An edge gateway transfers the data directly to moneo|cloud for further analysis. Leveraging moneo|cloud enables monitoring of returnable load carriers across multiple sites.
With an on-premises solution in place, the data can also be directly transmitted to an SAP system via Ethernet using a vAppliance. It is also possible to read data from PLC systems and connect other data sources to your system.

Track your returnable load carriers – even live in the cloud
To effectively integrate live tracking of your returnable load carriers into your process, you can either use direct transfer data to moneo|cloud or an on-premises solution. The integration in moneo|cloud is efficient, delivering fast results and significant cost savings.
moneo|cloud integration process
- Drag and drop the stations you want to monitor into a layout.
- Install the sensors and IO-Link hardware at all relevant locations.
- Connect the installed sensors to an edgeGateway.
- Connect the gateway to the cloud via LTE, Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Start tracking and set parameters for notifications.
- Gain valuable insights and continuously improve your efficiency.
On-premises integration process
- Drag and drop the stations you want to monitor into a layout.
- Install the sensors and IO-Link hardware at all relevant locations.
- Connect the installed sensors using a vAppliance.
- Connect the vAppliance with the moneo on-premises solution.
- If needed, use the interface to SAP to trigger goods transfer postings or replenishment controls.
Leverage transparent and efficient tracking of your returnable load carriers to cut costs and conserve resources!
