Machinery

Orientation

The PMD Profiler checks the correct orientation before another task is performed. For example, if the misaligned cage of a rolling element bearing is fed into the fully automated assembly process without this being noticed, considerable damage in the machine, sometimes leading to a prolonged downtime could be the result.

The Profiler detects the profile of the component without being affected by particularly shiny or matt materials.

Correct machining

Distinguishing the gear profile of an unprocessed and a machined component

In this application, the task is to recognise if a workpiece has already been machined, i.e., whether the gear profile is already present or whether there is still a flat and thus unmachined surface. While such an application is difficult to solve with 1D sensors, or can only be solved by investing a lot of time and effort, the PMD Profiler reliably detects the profile of the components and detects changes in the profile with very high precision. In the case of a solution with a camera system, the differences in contrast would have to be emphasised by shielding and external illumination, which would cause additional expenditure and costs.

To check if parts have been machined correctly, the PMD Profiler compares the profile of the workpiece to be inspected with the taught profile of the reference object. If, for example, holes are drilled in the wrong place or with a diameter that is too large, the PMD Profiler detects this deviation and issues a corresponding signal. It can also detect that no machining has been done, which may indicate a defect in or failure of the machine.
