Encoders monitor wheel rotation and ground speed

Graphic of harvester with inset of CANopen encoder on the wheel

An encoder for ground speed measurement converts the number of pulses from wheel rotation into an electrical signal that can be evaluated by the control system to calculate the ground speed.

The absolute encoder is highly accurate. It provides precise speed readings with very high resolution. Unlike GPS systems, encoders are not affected by external factors like weather, satellite signal obstructions. In addition, an absolute encoder can provide speed for both directions. However, the encoder cannot provide exact vehicle location.

Benefits

  • Cost effective and relatively easy to install.
  • Measures rotational speed of wheels or axles directly providing information in both rotating directions.
  • Accurate on hard surfaces where wheel rotation directly correlates with ground speed, i.e., no slippage is present.
  • Durable and robust, even in harsh environments.
