Slitting
The cathode or anode coil is inserted in a slitting machine in which the largest mother coil is cut into small daughter coils. The cutting process is carried out by several parallel blades. The cutting particles are cleaned from the electrode strips by exhaust, then the individual coils are rolled up and moved to the next process step in vacuum boxes.

Measuring the foil diameter
Exchanging the mother roll without interruption
The carrier foil is supplied to the processing sequence by means of a roller. If an empty roll is detected too late, the replacement cannot be prepared and must be made on short notice. This brings production to a stop. An accurate measurement of the mother roll diameter prevents this interruption. This leads to greater machine availability and also saves time and money.

Solution
Ultrasonic sensors from ifm provide contact-free detection regardless of the colour, transparency or surface qualities of the object. That makes them ideally suited for carrier foils that may be reflective. ifm photoelectric distance sensors are also exceptionally well suited for this application.

Monitoring cutting geometry
Ensuring continuously high cutting quality for slitting
Sharp and uneven edges due to dull or damaged blades can significantly lower the quality of the cells and cause a high level of rejects. This can be prevented by checking the cutting geometry.
Quality assurance
Solution
The O2D vision sensor from ifm can be used to detect incorrect cutting processes at an early stage. In combination with the matching software, the O2D offers precise object detection and inspection by means of blob analysis. This makes it possible to detect a sectional view that differs from the ideal condition quickly.
Recommended Products
Web edge control
Minimizing rejected electrode strips on the web edge
A precise supply of electrode strips to the cutting process is necessary to ensure correct cutting of the electrode strip for winding onto the daughter coil. Precise web edge control prevents incorrect cutting and the resulting rejects or products with reduced quality.
Enhancing performance
Quality assurance
Solution
To control the web edge, ifm offers optical object detection sensors and profile sensors. The O2D in combination with the matching software ensures especially precise measurements.

Suction and filter protection
Ensuring error-free functionality of the exhaust air system
Filters that are clogged or operating incorrectly due to metal chips can cause toxic aerosols or vapours to be released from the machine. It is absolutely mandatory to monitor filter systems to ensure safe operation for your employees as well as efficient production.
Ensuring system availability
Enhancing performance
Solution
Developed especially for use in exhaust air monitoring, the flow sensor type SA ensures that adequate and continuous extraction of fine metal chips and slurry mass is provided. The sturdy full-metal probe is resistant to aggressive aerosols, vapours and any particles carried in the extracted air.

Condition monitoring of exhaust air fans
Continuously ensuring ventilation in production
Asymmetrical fan blades and a rising bearing temperature may indicate that the fan has mechanical problems. These problems must be rectified promptly to prevent a failure, which could involve a costly production stoppage .
Ensuring system availability
Solution
Thanks to continuous vibration monitoring by means of a sensor system, the health status of a fan can be kept in view seamlessly. Maintenance can be condition-based and determined by actual needs, which lowers costs. Early detection by means of vibration diagnostics and channel speed monitoring on rolling bearings detects motor damage promptly. This makes it possible to prevent unplanned downtimes.
